Want to bleach your teeth to get that beautiful Hollywood smile?

Dr. Lisa J. Baker of Bloomington, IN, provides patients with bleaching and non-bleaching products to whiten teeth. A dental procedure Teeth-Whiteningnecessary for people who have stained or yellowed teeth.

How are teeth stained?

  • Foods and beverages like coffee, tea, sodas, red wines, and certain fruits or vegetables.

  • Chewing tobacco and smoking can stain teeth.

  • Inadequate brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash.

  • Several diseases affect enamel and expose dentin, the yellow layer under enamel, and certain treatments like radiation and chemotherapy can cause teeth discoloration.

  • Certain medications, antibiotics, tetracycline, and doxycycline, discolor teeth.

  • Certain dental materials like amalgam restorations, silver sulfide-containing materials, can cause graying of teeth.

  • Aging is natural but of course with that enamel gets worn away, revealing the yellow dentin.

  • Genetics dictates the natural color of enamel.

  • The environment can contribute to staining. Too much and excessive use of toothpaste containing fluoride and fluoride supplements may cause discoloration.

  • Trauma can disturb enamel as a child, causing discoloration to adult teeth.

So, how are teeth whitened?

Dr. Baker uses another method, other than bleaching. A flexible device is given to patients. A special gel is placed into the device and you're to place it over your teeth and wear it for a certain period of time. After removing the device, a second bleaching agent is applied on teeth and a special light activates the chemical to whiten teeth.

Chances are good that you’ve heard of Invisalign treatment, the nearly invisible way to straighten teeth. Teens and adults all over the country are turning to Invisalign to get their ideal smile, and you could be a great candidate too if you are looking to fix a crooked or misaligned smile. From the office of our Bloomington, IN, dentist, Dr. Lisa Baker, here are the benefits you’ll enjoy when you choose Invisalign:

Smile Preservation

Teeth that are crooked or misaligned can often wear away more quickly because the jaw is putting more pressure on certain teeth when biting and chewing. One way to prevent this problem is to get orthodontic treatment to straighten your smile and redistribute the weight evenly. By getting Invisalign you could end up protecting your teeth from serious damage.

Simple Oral Care

With traditional braces, it can be challenging to properly brush and floss around brackets and wires. After all, the last thing you want to deal with during orthodontic treatment cavities. Conversely, with Invisalign, you can actually remove your aligners prior to brushing and flossing, allowing you to care for your smile as you normally would.

No Need to Change Your Diet

Again, traditional braces come with a set of rules that don’t really apply to Invisalign. Besides making oral care easy you also won’t have to change your diet around to accommodate your treatment. Just remove your aligners prior to eating or drinking and you can still enjoy all of your favorite foods without worrying about damaging your braces.

Quicker Treatment

If you are an adult who is getting Invisalign from our Bloomington, IN, general dentist, then you may actually achieve results faster with Invisalign than you would with traditional braces (depending on the issues you are looking to correct, of course).

The average length of treatment with Invisalign is one year, however, you may get a straighter smile even sooner.

I think we can all agree that it’s much easier to implement proper preventive care measures every day to reduce your risk for decay and gum disease rather than just waiting to treat the problem once it happens. According to the CDC, approximately one in four American adults have untreated tooth decay. Here’s why everyone can benefit from visiting our Bloomington, IN, family dentist Dr. Lisa Baker every six months for cleanings and dental checkups:

Prevent Oral Health Problems

This is the number one reason everyone, no matter how healthy they are, should visit a dentist twice a year. Even those patients who are thorough brushers and avid flossers can still miss spots, leaving plaque and tartar to buildup. If you don’t have plaque and tartar removed this can lead to decay and gum disease. While tartar cannot be removed with an at-home toothbrush, our Bloomington, IN, dental team has the right tools to remove it.

Early Detection

While the goal is always to enforce proper at-home oral care and positive habits to keep teeth and gums healthy, we know that sometimes problems still occur. Since many problems, particularly gum disease, don’t always cause symptoms many people may have serious oral health issues brewing that they don’t even know is happening. By coming in every six months we can pinpoint decay and other issues early on when they can either be reversed or properly managed without complications.

Screen for Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is another problem that may not always present with obvious symptoms or signs. Of course, our dental team knows exactly what to look for to detect suspicious growths, lesions and changes in tissue that you might overlook. An oral cancer screening is the most effective tool that we have for the early detection of oral cancer. This painless physical exam screening is performed during each checkup, only takes a minute to complete and could just save your life.

Is it time to schedule cleanings for the whole family? No matter when you last visited the dentist, it’s never too late to create a long, trusting relationship with Dr. Baker in Bloomington, IN, that will put you and your family’s needs first. Call our dental office at (812) 332-2000 today to schedule your next checkup!

Getting a dental crown is faster than ever, thanks to CEREC same-day crowns. Your Bloomington, IN, family dentist, Dr. Lisa Baker can help you protect or enhance your smile with CEREC dental crowns.

Dental crowns in half the time

Before CEREC, adding a dental crown to a tooth required two visits. During the first appointment, your Bloomington, IN, dentist used to crownreduce the size of your tooth and made an impression of your mouth. She sent the impression off to a dental laboratory and placed a temporary crown on your tooth.

Unfortunately, your crown order was just one of many that the laboratory received. In most cases, you waited about two weeks for your new crown to be completed. In the meantime, you had to avoid tough or sticky foods that could damage or dislodge your temporary crown.

Today, there's no need to wait for a dental laboratory to fabricate your crown. In fact, Dr. Baker makes your CEREC crown for you in her office during your first and only crown appointment.

How does the CEREC process work?

Dr. Baker will still make your tooth a little smaller in preparation for your crown and take an impression of your mouth. If you received a crown in the past, dental putty may have been used for your impression. Although putty produces good results, it's messy and makes some people gag. The CEREC system uses putty-less digital impressions instead and provides a much more comfortable impression experience.

Your dentist uses CEREC's innovative software to design your new crown, then sends it to a milling machine, a device that's like a 3-D printer for crowns. The milling machine removes layers from a block of ceramic or resin to create your new crown while you wait. After the crown is ready, Dr. Baker will check its fit, make a few adjustments if necessary, and attach the restoration to your tooth with dental cement.

Same-day CEREC crowns offer an excellent alternative to two-visit porcelain crowns. Have you been putting off getting a crown? Call your Bloomington, IN, family dentist, Dr. Baker at (812) 332-2000 to schedule an appointment today!

Do you hate looking at photos of yourself because your teeth have become dull and yellow? Brightening your smile can be as easy as Bright White Smilemaking an appointment with your dentist. Thanks to teeth bleaching, offered by your Bloomington, IN, family dentist, Dr. Lisa Baker, your smile will be picture perfect once again.

How your teeth become dull

Teeth don't stay white for long if they're exposed to substances that can stain them. Exposure to tobacco or foods or beverages that contain dark pigments can make your teeth look dull and yellow. Foods and beverages most likely to stain teeth include coffee, tea, wine, soda, berries, ketchup, soy sauce, popsicles, sports drink, and brightly colored candies.

Although brushing is an excellent way to remove cavity-causing plaque from your teeth, it isn't quite as effective in getting rid of stains. The pigments that stain your teeth drift into microscopic pores in your tooth enamel. As more and more pigments are deposited in the pores, the duller your smile becomes.

Bleaching eliminates stains

Your Bloomington, IN, family dentist uses a whitening agent that contains hydrogen peroxide, a safe, powerful, and natural whitener. The hydrogen peroxide gel penetrates the pores in your enamel and bleaches stains away.

If you've ever tried whitening at home, you've probably noticed that hydrogen peroxide is also the active ingredient in over-the-counter whiteners. The products you can buy in stores and online contain much weaker formulations of the chemical compound. They may not be strong enough to produce the desired results or may require weeks or months of bleaching.

Professional teeth bleaching only takes about an hour. After the gel is removed from your teeth, your teeth will be three to eight shades lighter. Bleaching results can keep your smile bright and white for as long as five years.

Your safety and comfort is your dentist's priority

Sensitivity can be an issue during whitening. Your dentist uses a special gel to protect your roots and gums during your session and also places retractors in your mouth to hold your cheeks and lips away from your teeth. If you've experienced sensitivity in the past, she can choose the ideal hydrogen peroxide strength to prevent sensitivity.

Are you ready to brighten your smile with teeth bleaching? Call your Bloomington, IN, family dentist, Dr. Lisa Baker, at (812) 332-2000 to schedule your appointment.
