Veneers can be used to improve the appearance of teeth with various imperfections, including chipped areas, cracks, or stains. At our office in Bloomington, IN, our family dentist, Dr. Lisa Baker, can help you decide if veneers are the right choice for achieving the smile you desire.

What are Veneers?

Veneers are thin laminates placed against the front surface of teeth to conceal flaws, such as stains or discolorations. Veneers look completely natural and simply give your teeth a flawless appearance. Examples of cosmetic issues that can be improved with veneers include:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Oddly-shaped teeth
  • Uneven tooth surfaces
  • Stains and discolorations
  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Excess space between teeth

Veneers are custom made so they fit in place perfectly. They are cemented to the teeth so there is no worry about the veneers coming loose. Once in place, veneers look just like your natural teeth. At our office in Bloomington, IN, our skilled family dentist can help you decide if veneers are right for you.

Benefits of Veneers

Veneers can give you the flawless smile you desire by concealing various cosmetic issues. Another benefit of veneers is that they look and function just like your natural teeth. No one else will be able to tell you have veneers.

An additional benefit of veneers is that they are cemented to the teeth permanently. Once affixed to the teeth, veneers remain securely in place. You can bite into and chew food with confidence knowing your veneers will not come loose or fall off.

Tags: Cosmetic Fillings

Today's dental patients have a treatment of choice for tooth decay: cosmetic fillings. Colored to match healthy tooth structure, cosmetic fillings are placed by your family dentist in Bloomington, IN, Dr. Lisa Baker. Durable and realistic, these restorations help you forget you ever had cavities.

What is a dental cavity?

Also called dental caries, cavities are holes in your tooth enamel. Caused by acid-secreting bacteria in plaque and tartar on and between teeth, cavities worsen when untreated. In fact, as they progress, they can destroy interior pulp and even progress into the jaw bone. While preventable, tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among Americans ages 20 to 64, says the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

How your family dentist can help

In her Bloomington, IN, office, Dr. Baker uses a variety of filling materials to restore decayed teeth. For small to moderately-sized cavities, she usually chooses composite resin, a mix of plastic and glass powders. Composite resin is colored to match your tooth perfectly, and it is highly moldable, making it a perfect complement to your natural tooth structure.

After your dentist has removed the decayed portions of your tooth, she carefully layers the resin into the prepared site and hardens each layer with a blue light. Because of the resin's chemical properties, your dentist removes far less healthy tooth structure than traditional restorations require. This makes your restored tooth more flexible and durable.

Other cosmetic filling materials

Besides composite resin, Dr. Baker offers glass ionomer and porcelain fillings. As with composite resin, these fillings are tooth-colored and unnoticeable.

Glass ionomer works well on the sides of teeth (the non-chewing surfaces) and on exposed roots.

Finally, porcelain fillings--onlays and inlays--fill large cavities on back teeth. They replace or lie between the cusps of the teeth and are bonded with permanent cement.

A strong, healthy smile

Dr. Lisa Baker and her team will help you have one for life. If you need a filling, please call her Bloomington, IN, office for an appointment:(812) 332-2000.

Want to bleach your teeth to get that beautiful Hollywood smile?

Dr. Lisa J. Baker of Bloomington, IN, provides patients with bleaching and non-bleaching products to whiten teeth. A dental procedure Teeth-Whiteningnecessary for people who have stained or yellowed teeth.

How are teeth stained?

  • Foods and beverages like coffee, tea, sodas, red wines, and certain fruits or vegetables.

  • Chewing tobacco and smoking can stain teeth.

  • Inadequate brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash.

  • Several diseases affect enamel and expose dentin, the yellow layer under enamel, and certain treatments like radiation and chemotherapy can cause teeth discoloration.

  • Certain medications, antibiotics, tetracycline, and doxycycline, discolor teeth.

  • Certain dental materials like amalgam restorations, silver sulfide-containing materials, can cause graying of teeth.

  • Aging is natural but of course with that enamel gets worn away, revealing the yellow dentin.

  • Genetics dictates the natural color of enamel.

  • The environment can contribute to staining. Too much and excessive use of toothpaste containing fluoride and fluoride supplements may cause discoloration.

  • Trauma can disturb enamel as a child, causing discoloration to adult teeth.

So, how are teeth whitened?

Non-bleaching products are abrasive because the consist of strong chemicals that remove only surface stains on teeth but bleaching products, when used by your Bloomington family dentist, brighten your teeth several shades because they consist of peroxide.

Dr. Baker uses another method, other than bleaching. A flexible device is given to patients. A special gel is placed into the device and you're to place it over your teeth and wear it for a certain period of time. After removing the device, a second bleaching agent is applied on teeth and a special light activates the chemical to whiten teeth.

Need a consultation? If you have more questions about teeth bleaching, make sure you call your family dentist, Dr. Lisa Baker, in Bloomington, IN, at (812) 332-2000 today! Everybody deserves a great smile that makes them feel confident.

Chances are good that you’ve heard of Invisalign treatment, the nearly invisible way to straighten teeth. Teens and adults all over the country are turning to Invisalign to get their ideal smile, and you could be a great candidate too if you are looking to fix a crooked or misaligned smile. From the office of our Bloomington, IN, dentist, Dr. Lisa Baker, here are the benefits you’ll enjoy when you choose Invisalign:

Smile Preservation

Teeth that are crooked or misaligned can often wear away more quickly because the jaw is putting more pressure on certain teeth when biting and chewing. One way to prevent this problem is to get orthodontic treatment to straighten your smile and redistribute the weight evenly. By getting Invisalign you could end up protecting your teeth from serious damage.

Simple Oral Care

With traditional braces, it can be challenging to properly brush and floss around brackets and wires. After all, the last thing you want to deal with during orthodontic treatment cavities. Conversely, with Invisalign, you can actually remove your aligners prior to brushing and flossing, allowing you to care for your smile as you normally would.

No Need to Change Your Diet

Again, traditional braces come with a set of rules that don’t really apply to Invisalign. Besides making oral care easy you also won’t have to change your diet around to accommodate your treatment. Just remove your aligners prior to eating or drinking and you can still enjoy all of your favorite foods without worrying about damaging your braces.

Quicker Treatment

If you are an adult who is getting Invisalign from our Bloomington, IN, general dentist, then you may actually achieve results faster with Invisalign than you would with traditional braces (depending on the issues you are looking to correct, of course).

The average length of treatment with Invisalign is one year, however, you may get a straighter smile even sooner.
